Decision and strategy stress-testing
The Challenge
What have we missed?
I test a specific proposal before you commit, examining its assumptions, alternatives and the conditions under which it would make sense.
When this is useful.
A strategy is ready for approval, an investment depends on a few uncertain assumptions, or the strongest objection has not had a fair hearing.
When another approach may fit
A small, easily reversible decision may need a short internal discussion. A claim about an existing state belongs in an Independent Review.
The decision this supports
A decision record showing the case for proceeding, credible alternatives and conditions that would change the recommendation. The work cannot guarantee commercial success or remove uncertainty.
What I do and what you receive
- Map the decision, objectives and assumptions with the accountable sponsor.
- Examine supporting evidence, counter-evidence and plausible failure scenarios.
- Provide a written challenge, options and conditions for proceeding.
You provide an accountable sponsor, relevant records and access to the people needed for the agreed work. We agree exclusions, evidence access and who can use the findings before starting. Additional work needs an agreed change of scope.
Relevant previous work
Illustrative output: an assumption register recording each material assumption, its evidence, consequence if wrong and a test or decision condition.
Examine the case and its limitsScope, timing and fees
A defined-scope engagement on a proposed fixed-fee basis.
Scoped proposal; fee agreed before work begins. Plus VAT where applicable.
The number of options, depth of research and access to decision-makers affect the scope. Timing depends on the agreed work, evidence access, stakeholder availability and dependencies. The proposal sets out inclusions, exclusions and arrangements for changes; no standard turnaround is promised.
Does challenge mean finding fault?
No. A sound proposal may survive scrutiny. I explain which parts are supported and what remains uncertain.
What if the evidence changes the scope?
I explain what has changed and its implications. We agree whether to revise the work, obtain further evidence or stop before making further commitments.
